Clayton Oliver has been fined for driving with his licence suspended but maintains he didn’t know he wasn’t permitted to drive.
Oliver was hit with a $600 fine but avoided conviction after being pulled over on a suspended licence on November 16.
The Demons star had his case heard in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday but wasn’t in attendance according to The Age.
Oliver suffered a seizure on October 23 during the trade period but his lawyer, Sally Vardy, said her client had misunderstood medical advice.
“I wasn’t aware that I was suspended; I was aware that I wasn’t insured and if I did crash, I’d be liable for everything,” Oliver told police, via The Age.
“I didn’t think having one seizure from having a head knock accounted to getting my licence suspended.”
Vardy also said Oliver acknowledged he had received a letter in the mail from VicRoads but that he hadn’t opened it. The court heard that Oliver had been mailed a letter advising him his licence would be suspended on medical grounds from November 10.
The court was also told Oliver had not driven since the incident.
Oliver has started to train with Melbourne’s main group after a rocky off-season but his availability for early in the Demons’ 2024 campaign remains unclear.
