Melbourne great David Schwarz has been wowed by Harley Reid’s start to his career as a West Coast player.
Through six games, the No.1 pick from the 2023 draft is averaging 18.2 disposals, 5.2 clearances and 0.8 goals a game, but it’s his impact above statistics that is really standing out.
While he only just turned 19, Reid is already one of the strongest players consistently at stoppages and is using his burst to break away from his opponents.
He also floated forward and kicked three goals in Saturday’s Derby win over Fremantle where he grabbed a couple of huge contested marks.
Reid has had seven clearances each in his last two games as the Eagles have picked up wins against the Tigers and Dockers and Schwarz says it’s hard not to get carried away after his electric start.
“You mention Harley Reid, they’ve got a kid there that’ll be a 10-year player,” Schwarz said on SEN WA Breakfast.
“I thought Adam Simpson after the game was very, very smart in just toning it down and making sure we aren’t getting too carried away.
“But it’s hard not to get carried away when you see a kid come in and have the influence that he’s had in six games, it’s exciting.”
Reid’s awesome start even has some making comparisons to Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos, not for how they play, but for their immediate impact on their respective sides.
While Daicos has already been considered the best player in the league at stages throughout his first few campaigns, and was arguably the best player in a premiership side as a 20-year-old, Schwarz believes there’s a genuine debate about who you’d rather have on your side right now.
That debate isn’t even considering both of their future prospects given Reid will no doubt improve dramatically beyond just six games so far.
“Over here (in Melbourne) they were debating – would you take Harley Reid now or would you take Nick Daicos?” Schwarz said.
“Right now, if you had the choice, I think most experts said, ‘We’ll take Harley Reid’.
“That’s the level that they’re comparing him to, which might be a little unfair, but I think it’s justified.”
Reid will hope to continue his strong form when the Eagles face the Suns at People First Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
