Former AFL forward Cam McCarthy has passed away aged 29.

Multiple reports state McCarthy was found unresponsive by paramedics after being called to Lake Coogee south of Perth on Thursday evening.

“Upon arrival, it was confirmed a 29-year-old male was deceased,” a police statement reads.

“The death is being treated as non-suspicious.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

The AFLPA released a statement via CEO Paul Marsh:

All at the AFLPA extend our deepest sympathies to Cam’s family, friends and all of the people who worked and played alongside him at the GWS Giants and Fremantle.

This is a terribly sad time and we will make available whatever services and support Cam’s family, former teammates and his two football clubs may need during this tough time.

We remind all AFLPA members that they have free and confidential access to our wellbeing services nationwide and we encourage them to reach out should they require support.

McCarthy began his career at the GWS Giants when being drafted with pick 14, playing 21 games at the club before moving to Fremantle when he would make a further 49 appearances in a career that spanned seven seasons.

His AFL journey came to a conclusion at the end of 2020 after being told his Dockers contract would not be extended. McCarthy played for South Fremantle in the following years.
