The 4 certainties for Gold Coast versus Geelong

Back for another year, the SEN.com.au team gives you an insight into how every game will play out across the weekend.

Labelling something a ‘certainty’ in any sport is fraught with danger.

But we’ll attempt to find some anyway.

Here is what we consider certainties for the Round 10 Thursday night clash between Gold Coast and Geelong.

Gold Coast

Anderson 25+ disposals

Noah Anderson is averaging 28 disposals a game in 2024 and he’s only dipped below 25 on three of nine occasions.

While two of those have come in the last fortnight, he should get back to his best against the Cats who don’t possess any huge ball-winners in their on-ball group at the moment.

20+ is an absolute certainty and 25+ should be no issue for the Gold Coast gun.

Lukosius to kick a goal

Gold Coast forward Jack Lukosius loves playing in Darwin.

From two games at the venue last year, Lukosius returned 10 goals in some commanding performances inside 50.

It’s also the venue that he’s kicked the second most goals at behind People First Stadium.

While Geelong’s key defence is quite strong, we’re expecting Lukosius to continue performing in Darwin on Thursday night particularly as he’s been listed to start forward instead of back.

Geelong

Z. Guthrie for 6+ intercepts, 15+ disposals

The improving Cat is coming off his second best game for the season on rating points last week and impressed in the wet against Brisbane in Round 6.

Gold Coast has gone public with its plan to curtail Tom Stewart, but Zach Guthrie has proven in 2024 that he can play a similar role early as well.

He’ll line up on one of the Suns’ medium forwards and intercept from there. Six intercepts with 15 possessions should prove a dolly.

Stengle to kick a goal

Expect the footy to spend plenty of time on the ground at TIO Stadium, and there are few cleaner in the wet than Tyson Stengle.

The 2022 All-Australian kicked two goals in similar conditions against the Lions and is averaging that number throughout the 2024 season.

Coming off four majors last week, Stengle is back in his best form and with Tom Hawkins and Jeremy Cameron both out, he’ll need to play a big game on Thursday night.
