Every year as the NRL prepares for their annual State of Origin series, the chatter in AFL circles can often find its way there.
The question is often asked: Why doesn’t the AFL revive its own version of the concept?
With this in mind, former Fremantle star Paul Hasleby has gone about putting together his Western Australian state side as he sees it based on 2024 form.
Hasleby feels the WA team would certainly challenge the might of Victoria.
“It’s a really strong Western Australian lineup that I think could go over there and challenge,” Hasleby said on SEN WA’s The Run Home.
“No doubt the Victorians have the depth, they’ve got far more players. But when you bring it down to 22 or 23, if you have a good crop in your state, and it’s cyclical, we could go over there and take the Vics.”
Hasleby also noted: “I’d have to check the stipulations on some of these players.
“Charlie Cameron played for Swan Districts, but was born in Queensland.”
B: Wil Powell (GCS) | Sam Taylor (GWS) | Tom Barrass (WCE)
HB: Jordan Clark (FRE) | Jeremy McGovern (WCE) | Nic Martin (ESS)
C: Chad Warner (SYD) | Stephen Coniglio (GWS) | Blake Acres (CAR)
HF: Charlie Cameron (BRI) | Jesse Hogan (GWS) | Shai Bolton (RIC)
F: Bobby Hill (COL) | Jake Waterman (WCE) | Aaron Naughton (WB)
FOL: Tim English (WB) | Elliot Yeo (WCE) | Patrick Cripps (CAR)
I/C: Luke Jackson (FRE) | Tim Kelly (WCE) | Logan McDonald (SYD) | Brad Hill (STK)
Unlucky players: “Nat Fyfe, for mine, is not in there right now.
“Over his career, of course, he would have represented WA a number of times.
“Mitch McGovern, Mitch Duncan, Willie Rioli, Jamie Cripps, Brady Hough’s been terrific. That would be a good story. He could come close to this team given the season he’s had.
“Tom Mitchell, Liam Baker, Oscar Allen if he was fit. They would be some of the ones in contention.”
Hasleby also verbalised his stance on State of Origin following Garry Lyon’s passionate plea.
