Kane Cornes says Geelong can’t win the 2024 premiership after losing their fourth game in a row.
After starting the season 7-0, the Cats are now 7-4 with their latest defeat coming by four points against GWS at GMHBA Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Geelong’s four straight defeats have come against Melbourne, Port Adelaide, Gold Coast and now GWS - two of those defeats, against the Power and Giants, have also come at home.
Cornes made the bold statement as the Cats only mustered 2.3 (15) in the last quarter despite having 24 inside 50 entries. He feels the team lacks the composure needed to really get over the best sides.
“Well done to the Giants, what a win in the context of their season,” Cornes told Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.
“But the fallout for Geelong will be significant, they can’t win the premiership from here after losing four in a row.
“One of the reasons why is because they butchered it late … you mentioned they had 24 inside 50 entries (in the last quarter).
“They had 24 entries for just one mark inside 50 … they completely lost composure.
“They coughed up a golden opportunity last night the Cats.”
Another reason why Cornes has lost confidence in the Cats is an apparent lack of midfield depth.
The Giants won the clearance count 37-44, a stat the Cats have only won twice in 11 games this season.
“They can’t win the premiership from here,” Cornes reiterated.
“Their midfield is so thin, they were destroyed in their once again.
“They’ve lost four in a row, they’ve lost their last two at home.
“It’s not what you would think from a premiership side.
Geelong will be desperate to bounce back when they host Richmond at GMHBA Stadium next Saturday night.
