Just seven days after being formally axed as captain and fullback of the NSW Blues, James Tedesco has stunningly been called back into the squad to replace an injury Dylan Edwards.

The debate for the NSW No.1 jersey was easily the hottest topic in the NRL over the last month, with the incumbent eventually falling just short of retaining his jersey against the fan-favoured Edwards.

However, the fairytale Origin debut for Edwards has been put on ice for now as a quad concern ruled him out of Game I, forcing coach Michael Maguire to recall the axed skipper to the side on four days notice.

With an understandable amount of mixed emotions surrounding the decions, former Blues captain and assistant coach Danny Buderus revealed what he would be telling Tedesco ahead of his return.

“Teddy’s done it plenty of times before,” Buderus said on SEN 1170 Mornings.

“(He’s) played in big matches and he’s lead our state, Australia, he’s the captain there and the incumbent fullback.

“I think Teddy’s across it all and he’s a real strong character around the mindset, and what it has to be to perform at a high level.

“I think he’ll take it all in his stride, the non-selection, he’d probably get it as well from a point of view of Dylan Edwards probably deserves his shot and he’s played 22 straight (Origin) games for the Blues.

“His professional enough to know that but he’ll go in and really snap into a mindset and I reckon the player would’ve got a bit of energy from Teddy, a bit of confidence from him as well.”

Buderus theorised that despite being named as the new captain, Jake Trbojevic may lean on Tedesco ahead of his maiden series as skipper of NSW.

“James Tedesco is usually the captain, that’ll take the pressure off James, he’ll go straight in and play a role,” Buderus added.

“There’s a lot of senior players there and I’m sure Jake will probably lean on Teddy at times.”

The 2024 Origin series kicks off at Accor Stadium in Sydney as the Blues host the Maroons on Wednesday, June 5th.
