The winner of the 2024 Mark of The Year would likely be one of two Collingwood forwards if the award was handed out after Round 14.
Jamie Elliott looked to have sewn up the gong with his huge Anzac Day screamer over Essendon defender Ben McKay, but his teammate Bobby Hill answered with an absolute ripper on top of Billy Frampton and Charlie Comben on Sunday against North Melbourne.
Elliott’s mark was more of a traditional screamer with both of his knees planted on the key defender’s shoulders before taking the ball at its highest point.
Hill’s had a little bit extra as he seemingly hung in the air before putting his knee on shoulders to get a second rise prior to landing like a cat on his feet.
SEN analyst David King found it tough to pick between the two grabs but went with Hill as he felt a player of his stature simply shouldn’t be able to complete such a spectacular aerial act on the footy field.
“There’s something about Bobby Hill’s (mark) that just amazes me,” King said on SEN’s Whateley.
“He (Hill) shouldn't be able to do that and Jamie Elliott, to me, just seems like he does it all the time.
“I think there’s something about the way Bobby smiles about the game too, it is a warming sort of feeling. There’s a comfortable manner about him.
“So, probably Bobby's for me (wins it). I loved his performance. I thought his game was enormous.”
Hill ended up booting five goals as the Pies came from the clouds to beat North by one point.
With 10 rounds to go, players around the competition know they’ve got a high ceiling to reach if they’re to eclipse either Hill or Elliott for the coveted award come season’s end.
Elliott is a previous winner of the Mark of the Year in 2013, while Hill was nominated on multiple occasions while playing for GWS and took a famous speccy over Brandon Starcevich in the 2023 Grand Final for the Pies en route to the Norm Smith Medal.
