The Daily Telegraph’s David Riccio believes the Warriors will be forced to make some tough decisions on their two best players ahead of the 2025 season.
Following their 66-6 thrashing at the hands of the Gold Coast Titans, the Warriors were dealt a further blow after it was revealed that talismanic halfback Shaun Johnson suffered a nasty achilles which will have him sidelined once again for at least a month.
Additionally, fans are concerned that Addin Fonua-Blake could be released from his contract earlier than expected as the Warriors’ finals hopes begin to rapidly fade.
Riccio told SEN that Warriors management are attempting to delicately navigate the immediate futures of their stars.
“Shaun Johnson’s future is going to be fascinating,” Riccio said on SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“He is now out for at least four weeks with an achilles injury and I can tell you that there is an offer on the table.
“The odds of him playing are decreasing by the day.
“Time will tell on what happens there but the Warriors do have three capable halves.
“CEO Cameron George has been quick to dispel rumours about (Parramatta playmaker) Dylan Brown (and) there’s been no approach by Brown’s management.
Johnson had a career-best year in 2023 but the 33-year-old has failed to replicate that magical season where he narrowly missed out on his first Dally M Medal.
Riccio believes the news surrounding Fonua-Blake, who is set to join Cronulla in 2025, is far more positive for Warriors supporters.
“At this point in time, he remains a Warrior and is committed to finishing his career at the club (at the end of 2024),” Riccio continued.
“His destination club, the Cronulla Sharks, don’t have any salary cap space or room to get him.
“Addin Fonua-Blake will see out the remainder of his contact with the Warriors.”
The Warriors have a chance to bounce back in front of a home crowd when they host the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday at Go Media Stadium.
