Australian Football great Mark Bosnich has slammed the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) as the governing body of the A-League Men’s and Women’s competition enters another stage of financial woes.
With the APL already going through a well-publicised financial battle, the level of concern hit a new level on Tuesday morning as a massive cut to funding of the clubs was confirmed.
Going into the 2024/25 A-Leagues season, clubs will only receive $500k from the APL, a massive reduction on the historically high $3 million previously allocated.
With clubs needing to spend a minimum of $2.25 million to be compliant with the league’s salary cap rules, many of the sides looked to be in serious financial turmoil.
As the light at the end of the tunnel for the APL and its clubs begins to grow slimmer, Bosnich whacked the game’s organisers for putting itself in this position.
“I’m not involved with the A-Leagues and haven’t been since they made the change and I thank the lord every morning, especially this morning that I’m actually not,” Bosnich said on SEN 1170 Mornings.
“On the flip side of that, I am very, very mad because of all the blowhards, that we came across during that time when we were involved in the A-League, there was so many that would come in and wanted to get involved, no problem, you give everyone a chance.
“Not to be known that when it came to crunch, that a lot of these people were like white-anting people, on one hand it’s a terrible indictment on the game.
“This is a prime example to anyone who’s got a business or aspiring to have a business and hire people, just look and make sure, regardless of what somebody says, it’s their actions that says a story.
“If somebody comes to you, telling you they can do a better job than somebody else, who’s been doing that job very well, be very suspicious because if they do it to that person they’ll do it to you eventually.”
