Warriors playmaker Luke Metcalf has provided an update on his lengthy injury recovery.
As the Warriors enter desperation mode for the final stretch of the NRL season, it appears they'll be without Metcalf for at least the next four weeks, as he recovers from his broken tibia.
The Coffs Harbour native suffered the injury early in the win over Newcastle Knights back in round four at Mt Smart, putting him on the shelf for the past 16 weeks.
With just seven matches remaining, it puts Metcalf's projected comeback against Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval in round 24, at which point the Warriors' playoff fate may already be decided.
"It's been going pretty quick," Metcalf told SENZ's Running it Straight.
"I've got a few boxes left to tick. I think I'm about a month away and then I'll be back playing."
Fortunately, the Warriors have had a pair of worthy replacements in Te Maire Martin and Chanel Harris-Tavita to plug the gaps left by Metcalf and Shaun Johnson, who could be recovered from his Achilles tendon troubles in time to face West Tigers next week.
"My PlayStation has had a nice little workout," Metcalf joked. "Annoying my missus as well, I think she's sick of me. I've been at home so many days.
"But trying to just keep my head down and train, and do everything I can to try and get back to what I was doing before."
The 25-year-old is all too familiar with the frustrations of dealing with long-term injury, having had his 2023 campaign curtailed by a hamstring tear.
But that experience has given him the self-belief that when he does get the green light - whenever that may be - he'll be able to hit the ground running without fear of his high-tempo game being compromised.
"I'm pretty confident coming back from an injury. I've had a few now, so I know I can come back and be fine.
"It's annoying, but I feel pretty confident that, when I'm playing and I see a hole, I'm going to run into it as fast as I can.
"I'm just really excited (to get back)."
