Four-time premiership Hawk Luke Hodge has predicted who he thinks will play off in the 2024 AFL Grand Final.
Like most, Hodge is picking Sydney to make it to the last Saturday of September after their 14-3 start to the campaign.
After getting things back on track with three wins on the trot, Hodge is backing 2022 premiers Geelong to face off against the Swans in a repeat of that season's Grand Final.
Hodge spoke about the remarkable turnaround from the Cats who lost six of their seven games between Rounds 8 and 15 before reigniting their flailing season.
“After seeing Geelong up close the last two weeks, I would go for Sydney versus Geelong,” Hodge said on SEN’s Sportsday when asked who he would pick right now.
“But in saying that, four weeks ago, I had Geelong out of the season.
“This is what we're talking about. From two to 13 (on the ladder) there's two games difference.
“A month ago, I was looking at Geelong going, ‘Their forward line is slow, they're not agile, they don't look very good, their midfield doesn't look very sharp’…
“But they throw Tom Stewart in (the midfield), they get (Patrick) Dangerfield back, (Jeremy) Cameron's had 15 shots the last two weeks, they get Gary Rohan back and Shannon Neale comes in.
“You can only really go off what you've seen over the last month and make a decision from that.
“Sydney have had two games where they haven't been up to scratch, but they've lost by one and two points and then they go and dominate on the weekend.”
The two sides faced off in the 2022 decider with Geelong prevailing 133-52 but Hodge is certain a battle would be far more even in 2024 now that Sydney’s young guns like Errol Gulden, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, James Rowbottom and Tom McCartin have had a further two years of development.
“I think if you look at those sides in that 2022 Grand Final, I remember sitting there thinking Geelong looked like men and Sydney looked like boys,” Hodge said.
“Now I reckon if they went out there and stood side by side, I reckon it’d be a fair battle.
“This is a hypothetical, but we're just saying in the form that they're in (it’s Sydney and Geelong).”
The 2024 AFL Grand Final will be played on Saturday, September 28 at the MCG.
