Round 19 threw up the usual challenges to top-of-the-ladder teams, but it was a culling round of sorts for those contenders at the bottom of the group of 13 live chances.
The Pies and Suns aren't in any shape to launch serious challenges for the flag and the eight looks effectively out of reach, save for a miracle.
So the GOOD for the weekend was a toss-up between the Dogs’ victory at the Cattery - an unbelievably impressive performance and a warning that they are one of the best sides in it - and the game in Queensland yesterday, incredible heat in more ways than one.
In the end, it was the Dogs who were the most impressive performers of the weekend.
The BAD, well that was clearly the injuries and the toll it took on flag fancies.
Tom De Koning and Alex Pearce as well as Tom Papley, Will Hayward and Dane Rampe in a horror weekend for the Swans reminding us all again, that premierships aren't won in May, June or July as some have been suggesting.
And so to the UGLY, the tunnelling of the ‘Lizard’ Nick Blakey that went un-whistled was unbelievable.
Four umpires all saw it. Not one blew the whistle.
It was a tough field though when you consider the Errol Gulden push-out with the studs, the King Charlie Curnow push-out with the left arm when he went back and then kicked the goal - incredible that it was un-whistled.
Then yesterday an even more blatant push out of Lachie Cowan on Cam Zurhaar, how that wasn't paid was absolutely staggering.
Folks, I feel your frustration - Andrew Dillon, seriously mate, it needs addressing.
Of course, yes, the Bombers’ loss was also a shocker on Friday night, putting pressure on them to qualify for finals, particularly after I went into the bat for them last week.
But in the end, it was the ‘Lizard’s’ non-free that was my ugly for the weekend.
It’s another incident where there's no free-kick paid on Sunday, but you're guilty at the MRO, if not the Tribunal, on Monday.
