Former Adelaide forward Josh Jenkins has named the two clubs that he feels would suit Taylor Walker if the Crows veteran decided to move on at season’s end.
The 34-year-old veteran is out of contract this year but according to reports is keen to play on at Adelaide in 2025.
While Walker wants to remain a Crow, some reports have suggested that the 2023 All-Australian could be open to playing for another club if he’s not offered a new deal.
His former teammate Jenkins believes that Melbourne and Collingwood would suit the Crows’ all-time leading goal kicker if he were not offered a new deal.
Jenkins thinks that the Crows need to have an open discussion with the veteran to prioritise the development of Darcy Fogarty and Riley Thilthorpe, which may lead to a potential departure.
“They (Adelaide) need to have a very open discussion with ‘Tex’,” Jenkins said on SEN’s The Run Home.
“They need to explore as much as they possibly can what and whether those two boys, Darcy Fogarty and Riley Thilthorpe, can do as the one-two punch in the front half as they’re the future.
“I think it’s less about Tex and it is more about the Crows and those two players.
“So, I think there is absolutely a world where Tex may need to go and play somewhere else.”
While Walker may be offered a diminished role if the younger duo are preferred, Jenkins could see him accepting that role knowing that he’s one injury or form away from again being first picked, especially as he wants to be a one-club player.
“I think he would because a diminished role is no guarantee - Fogarty or Thilthorpe could fall over in Round 2 and then you play the rest of that season,” Jenkins said.
“I think you commit to him as a part of your best 23 or you say, ‘We’re going to go without you’.
“It sounds like he’s warming to the idea (of a move). He is one of those types who certainly would want to be a one-club player, that means a lot to him.
“But there’s been plenty of players who have gone and played a couple of years elsewhere.”
While Jenkins named the Magpies and Demons as potential destinations should he look for other opportunities given their struggles in front of the ball, he couldn’t see Walker ever playing for crosstown rivals Port Adelaide.
“Collingwood and Melbourne off the top of my head,” Jenkins said.
“No (I don’t think he’ll go to Port Adelaide), that could muddy waters that are already muddy.”
Walker booted a career-best 76 goals from 22 games in 2023, but has kicked just 21 majors in 14 games in 2024.
He was managed for the club’s Round 19 win over Essendon.
