The six coaches out of contract in 2025 and whether their clubs should re-sign them now

With the Giants making the call to re-sign Adam Kingsley until 2028, while coaches around the league also deserve a contract extension?

Kane Cornes has gone through every coach currently out of contract in 2025 and whether their clubs should jump to lock them in long-term.

Sam Mitchell at the Hawks, John Longmire at the Swans, Luke Beveridge at the Bulldogs, Chris Fagan at the Lions, Ken Hinkley at the Power and Justin Longmuir at the Dockers will all be watched closely over the next 12 months.

This is particularly true giving the looming Tasmanian expansion side who will be hunting for their inaugural senior coach.

“Adam Kingsley has re-signed and he was out of contract at the end of 2025, which had me thinking about the other coaches that are out of contract at the end of 2025 and who deserves an extension,” Cornes told SEN Breakfast.

“The Giants have said ‘he’s the guy, we’re all in with Kingsley’.

“Sam Mitchell is out of contract in 2025. Surely Hawthorn are re-signing him as quickly as they possibly can.

“What about John Longmire? He’s the second best coach in football. They’re on top of the ladder and flying, why not extend him now?

“I think Justin Longmuir has done enough with the group that they’ve got. I’d go yep, give him the contract extension now.

“Chris Fagan has done everything right, but you’d probably just hold. Especially with the Tasmania discussion happening there.

“Luke Beveridge the same. I’d be holding on re-signing Beveridge.

“Ken Hinkley I would hold on as well. It’s a really interesting group coming out of contract next year.”

David King says the Lions have a big call on Fagan, given they have been in this premiership window since 2019.

“Everyone thinks I’m harsh on Chris Fagan. I think when you have this list and this window, you’ve got to win one,” King said.

“Melbourne we talk about, they’ve only won one, we’ve been critical of them not winning two or three, but they got one.

“Brisbane need their ‘one’. They need to get one while they’re in this window. That’s where I ask whether he’s the man.

“They came so close last year. I still think they’ve had the best list. That’s the discussion for me.”

The only coaches currently signed long-term are Damien Hardwick at the Suns (2028), Kingsley is now also at 2028, while Alastair Clarkson is signed until 2027.
