The Australian women’s 4x200m freestyle relay team has won gold and broken the Olympic record in the process on Day 6 of the Paris Games.
Bookended by gold medal stars Mollie O’Callaghan and Ariarne Titmus, and supported by Lani Pallister and Brianna Throssell, the golden girls defeated the USA and China with a time of 7:38.08m.
O’Callaghan and Titmus came back into the team after Jamie Perkins and Shayna Jack were present for the qualifier in which the Australians dominated, swimming the fastest time by nearly seven seconds.
In the final, O’Callaghan kicked off and was close to world record time after her 200m, Pallister and Throssell swam well to maintain the lead, and Titmus was strong in the anchor leg to bring it home.
It was the eighth gold medal for Team Australia in Paris which has the nation sitting fourth on the overall tally on 18 medals which includes 6 silver and 4 bronze.
The Aussie swim team - The Dolphins - have won 5 gold, 5 silver and 1 bronze with O’Callaghan claiming her third gold.
Australia’s other medal winner on Day 6 was Jemima Montag who claimed bronze in the 20km race walk.
