Round 19 of the VFL season is complete with eight games taking place across the weekend.
Collingwood, Geelong, Richmond, Sandringham and Sydney all took the weekend off with the bye as the ladder really began to take shape with two home and away rounds remaining.
From an AFL selection point of view, several performers put their names up in lights in hopes of a call-up.
On Sunday, two games took place with the first at Blacktown with the Giants going down to Box Hill 77-78 with the AFL sides meeting in Canberra.
Finn Maginness responded to his AFL axing with a huge two-goal, 31-disposal outing and he was well supported by midfield partner Cam Mackenzie who had 33 touches of his own. Up forward, mid-season draftee Jasper Scaife was dangerous kicking 4.2 from just seven disposals as he pushes for an AFL debut.
For the Giants, Nick Haynes (36 disposals), James Leake (34 disposals) and Wade Derksen (two goals, 17 disposals) stood up in defeat.
Sunday’s other game occurred at Williamstown with the Seagulls going down to North Melbourne 67-75.
For the Roos, Charlie Lazarro (one goal, 24 disposals) and Hugh Greenwood (one goal, 23 disposals) did all they could to return to the senior side.
Going back to Friday night, Jack Macrae (43 disposals) and Ryley Sanders (three goals, 39 disposals) had monster games in Footscray’s 124-68 win over Casey with the Dogs proving they have the depth that other clubs would die for as they push towards finals in both the seniors and reserves.
Other standout Round 19 performers on AFL lists included Gold Coast’s Rory Atkins who had 36 disposals in the win over Coburg, Jarryd Lyons who had 29 disposals to go with two goals in Brisbane’s win over Carlton, and Will Setterfield who picked up 43 touches in Essendon’s win over the Northern Bullants.
Werribee still sit atop the ladder despite their 55-61 loss to Southport who solidified their finals place.
