SEN WA’s Tim Gossage says there’s been a significant shift in Jake Waterman’s negotiations with West Coast over an improved contract.
Waterman has one year remaining on his current deal with the Eagles but reportedly was pushing for a long-term contract on more money after reports emerged that Geelong was ramping up a push to lure the forward to Victoria with a big-money deal.
With Waterman enjoying a career-best campaign with the Eagles, kicking 48 goals from 17 games, Gossage’s information is that the 26-year-old will definitely remain at the club and that an announcement could be imminent about him signing a re-negotiated contract.
“There was a little story that was bubbling around and I'm not going to tumble into what someone else has written,” Gossage said on SEN WA Breakfast.
“But my information is, do not be surprised if, in the next few days or early next week, we have a significant announcement out of West Coast regarding the re-contracting/longer-term deal for Jake Waterman.
“My information is that there has been a significant shift in recent times.
“There should be there was all that talk … and there was the Geelong so-called offer of five years and on quite good money, and he's got one year to run on his current deal.
“But my information is fairly strong that there's been a significant shift in the last couple of days in regards to his contract at West Coast, and that Jake Waterman will be staying at the football club on a longer-term deal.”
Waterman’s manager Paul Peos previously told SEN that he was renegotiating his client’s deal with the club.
The forward will hope to continue his good form when the Eagles face the Kangaroos in Hobart on Saturday.
