Richmond veteran Dylan Grimes has announced his retirement.

The 33-year-old has called time on his 15-year career with the Tigers which delivered 234 games and three premierships (2017, 2019 and 2020)

Grimes won the Jack Dyer Medal in 2021, was named in the All-Australian team in 2019 and was co-captain of the club alongside current skipper Toby Nankervis in 2022 and 2023.

“The Club had plenty of reasons to throw in the towel with me over many years with surgeries, form slumps or whatever (else),” Grimes said in a statement released by the club.

“There is a part of me that has had a chip on my shoulder for my entire career to try and repay the debt I felt like I owed the Club.

“Almost everything good in my life, I have because of here, so thank you.

“To be a great Club you need to have great people, and this place is blessed with some of the best that there is.

Grimes added: “I will miss the thrill of the contest, and I will miss the incredible feeling of playing in front of the best fans in the world… But I leave with no regrets and just a sense of pride for everything we have achieved together.”

The courageous defender was drafted by the Tigers in the 2010 pre-season draft and went on to become one of the club’s most important players during the successful premiership era.

Grimes underwent back season-ending surgery earlier the year. His final game in yellow and black came against Fremantle in Round 8.
