Christian Petracca is trying to plot a path out of Melbourne, confirms SEN news breaker Sam Edmund.

Noise about Petracca’s discontent at Melbourne has bubbled away for weeks and that culminated in an article written by Sam McClure in The Age on Monday where it was reported that the superstar told the club and teammates that he has a desire to leave the Demons.

McClure’s report said that Petracca made his thoughts clear at his exit interview on Monday and that he wants to play for a rival Victorian club in 2025.

Edmund backed up McClure’s report and added further details including that the 28-year-old attended a club end-of-season function on Saturday night which was awkward for his presence.

While Carlton and Collingwood have been linked to Petracca due to their status as big Victorian clubs with premiership plans in their near future, Edmund says that he wouldn’t only play for those two sides.

“It’s seismic news out of Melbourne, Christian Petracca is trying to plot a path out of the Demons,” Edmund told SEN Sportsday.

“The Sam McClure story on The Age website this afternoon is correct. Christian Petracca has made it clear that he would like to play for another club next year.

“The end-of-season function on the Saturday night was awkward for his presence among him and some of his teammates.

“Now, this is not to say it definitely happens, of course, and it's also incorrect to say that Christian Petracca only wants to play for Carlton or Collingwood, that’s not true.

“But what does appeal to Petracca is the prospect of - if he did end up leaving - playing for a big Melbourne club, that’s a tick - with a big base and big resources.

“He wants leadership from the top office. He wants a training base – he’s never liked going out to Casey.”

While Petracca does want out, Edmund says that the Demon understands a trade could be unrealistic given his huge trade value and the fact that he’s contracted until the end of the 2029 season.

Even though the 28-year-old may remain a Demon, Edmund says that a number of his teammates are unhappy with him and that relationships have been strained between player and club across the board.

“But he knows it's very difficult, and he knows he signed that seven-year contract a couple of years ago through to 2029. So, at the same time, he's realistic to where he sits,” Edmund said.

“More than a couple of those teammates are unhappy with him at the moment. They didn't like the trip to Noosa in particular, they were vocal about that and there’s been relationships strained across the board.”
