All-Australian selector Kane Cornes has revealed what was the toughest call to make with the 2024 team.
The key defender battle between Harris Andrews and Jacob Weitering was a 50-50 call according to Cornes, with the Carlton vice-captain ultimately receiving the blazer.
“The discussion around Harris Andrews versus Jacob Weitering is one we certainly went in-depth and spent hours on,” he told SEN Breakfast.
“That was the hardest one. Andrews versus Weitering and largely they’re pretty similar in every aspect.
“It was a collective decision that we went with Weitering.
“I can understand the frustration. I think leaving out Jeremy McGovern would’ve been the wrong decision, so it was Andrews versus Weitering.
“Harris is incredibly unlucky, I’ll just say that.”
Josh Jenkins made the case earlier in the month for Andrews making the All-Australian team.
“Brisbane, by my calculation, have about eight less wins this season without Harris Andrews saving the day,” Jenkins told SEN’s The Run Home.
“If it wasn’t for him keeping them afloat, their teetering season would have fallen completely off the cliff.
“The data is this – he has been in 76 one-on-one contests this year and he has lost three per cent of them.
“So he stops you, while also leading the competition in intercept marks. The man is impassable.
“He is a superstar. He’s actually my favourite player and he’s a bloody key defender.
“I love watching him play. I think he’ll beat Lachie Neale for the best and fairest this year.”
