Should the Brownlow Medal count be held during the pre-finals bye?

SEN news breaker Sam Edmund certainly thinks it should be moved there from its traditional place on the Monday of Grand Final week.

Edmund thinks that moving the Brownlow to the Sunday during the pre-finals bye would help fill the void of no AFL footy while it would also put a bow on the home and away season before September action kicks off.

He discussed a potential shifting of the event with 1988 winner Gerard Healy and four-time premiership Hawk Luke Hodge on SEN Sportsday.

The star duo agreed with Edmund and they think it’d also suit the schedule of players who are both eliminated from September and playing finals the week after if it’s held on the Sunday.

Edmund: “We’ve got to get the Brownlow in this little block here”

Healy: “I understand where you're coming from and it's good because everybody gets back (to the event).

“The Brownlow in Grand Final week when the Brownlow medallist isn't in the building is very deflating.”

Edmund: “This is the week, or maybe Sunday night (in the weekend off) would have been a great time.

“It almost puts the full stop on the home and away season as well then we reset for the finals.

“It fills the void that we feel like we've got notwithstanding AFLW and the various other AFL awards we have got.”

Hodge: “It makes sense … all the players will be there because they would have finished their week and their wash up from the season with all the meetings.

“All the players that are playing will still be around anyway.

“I wouldn't mind the Sunday night as it gives a few extra days for the guys who are playing on Thursday to come back.”

The 2024 Brownlow Medal will be held on Monday, September 23 at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium.
