Nathan Bassett could be reuniting with Simon Goodwin at Melbourne.

SEN SA’s David Wildy is hearing that the former Adelaide defender is set to take up an assistant coaching role at the Demons under his former Crows teammate.

Bassett and Goodwin played together at Adelaide for a decade from 1998 to 2008.

Wildy says the potential move is not yet confirmed, but he is hearing that the former Port Adelaide assistant coach, who departed the Power at the end of 2023, could be on his way to Melbourne.

“I’m not 100 per cent sure but I’m hearing Nathan Bassett has picked up an assistant coach role with Melbourne under Simon Goodwin,” Wildy said on SEN’s Sportsday SA.

“You can’t break stories with the modern internet, as soon as the story breaks it’s there.

“I’m going out on a limb here saying allegedly. Very good sources told me that ‘Bass’ will be in Melbourne.

“He should be coaching, he’s a wonderful coach, I’m surprised he’s still not at Port Adelaide and I’m surprised the Crows didn’t pick him up as well.”

Bassett was a rookie on Melbourne’s list in 1997 but did not play a senior game for the Demons before being traded to Adelaide prior to the 1998 season.

He retired in 2008 after 210 games with the Crows before moving into coaching with Norwood in 2010 and won two SANFL premierships with the Redlegs in 2012 and 2013.

The now 47-year-old spent two seasons as an assistant at Essendon in 2014 and 2015 prior to moving to Port Adelaide where he remained until the end of 2023.

Current Demons assistant Andrew McQualter is being tipped to land the senior job at West Coast which could open up a spot on Goodwin’s staff for Bassett.
