Grading every player as the Brisbane Lions dominate the 2024 AFL Grand Final

The Brisbane Lions have claimed the 2024 AFL Premiership, pulverising the Sydney Swans by 60 points in the Grand Final in front of 100,013 fans at the MCG.

Katy Perry kicked off the perfect Saturday afternoon with a bang as the contest roared into action, the two sides using every inch of the MCG before Will Hayward snapped home for the first of the day.

A Tom Papley stunner was quickly erased as the young cub Kai Lohmann slotted back-to-back majors to electrify the Brisbane faithful.

An eight-point lead in favour of the Lions following the first exchange saw the Swans lose yet another opening term.

Kai Lohmann continued his brilliance nailing his third and the first of the second term, before a forgettable moment by the field umpire walked the Swans into the square for a rapid response.

Joe Daniher arrived on the scene to drive the Lions forward, nailing one and setting up a second as Brisbane ran completely rampant, pushing the lead out to a whopping 46 points at the main break.

+64 in disposals, +4 in clearances, +39 in marks and +12 inside 50s, the Lions pulverised the Swans all over the MCG in the first half.

Will Ashcroft and Lachie Neale continued to dominate as the third term got underway, as this Cam Rayner screamer put the exclamation mark on what was a stunning performance by the Lions.

A 73-point advantage entering the final term was simply insurmountable for the Sydney Swans, as the Lions soared home to claim the 2024 Premiership!

With the final score reading a massive 18.12 (120) to Sydney’s 9.6 (60), we graded every player in the final contest of the 2024 AFL season!

Brisbane Lions:

Will Ashcroft: A+

All the makings of a superstar, getting it done with class on the biggest stage. It's hard to fathom what Ashcroft can achieve in his career, however it cannot go understated that we are looking at what already is a star of the competition. The 2024 Norm Smith Medallist collected 30 disposals kicked a goal and has won a premiership in his first September action.

Lachie Neale: A+

So many questions regarding his health leading into this one, but didn’t he answer. Sliced through the centre with all the class of a two-time Brownlow Medallist and having been on the wrong end of a Grand Final, Neale stepped up and delivered a phenomenal performance. Now a flag to his name, the Lions co-captain should be elevated into conversations surrounding the game’s best ever. 34 disposals, nine clearances, fantastic.

Callum Ah Chee: A+

An incredible finals series from Ah Chee. Nobody could have predicted the level of footy this man was capable of, but he will go down in history as one of the Lions’ best for the 2024 finals series. Another four majors to cap off a phenomenal run of form.

Kai Lohmann: A

A man made for the biggest moments, and didn’t he deliver. Back-to-back goals to kickstart the Lions’ afternoon, a third just minutes into the second term, absolutely pivotal in forcing momentum in Brisbane’s favour. Four goals for the electric youngster.

Brandon Starcevich: A

Phenomenal game, cleaned up on several occasions, always in the right place. Held Tom Papley completely out of the game.

Hugh McCluggage: A

An absolutely dominant first half. Received plenty of attention and yet continued to perform. As classy as it gets.

Dayne Zorko: A-

Has aged like wine. Another stellar performance off the back flank for the seemingly timeless star.

Harris Andrews: A-

Didn’t end up having too much to do however answered when called upon. A well-deserved premiership for one of the competition’s best.

Jarrod Berry: B+

We all knew how much this game meant for Berry, and he delivered with class. 20 and a goal, certainly made up for his 2023 Grand Final error.

Joe Daniher: B+

If it does turn out to be Joey’s final game, he can look back on a brilliant career, capped off with a premiership medal. Not his most clinical game but certainly influential.

Josh Dunkley: B+

21 touches, four clearances, did as required with poise. Two-time premership player!

Cam Rayner: B+

Athleticism and explosion off the charts. All he needs is half a step and he finds a way to deliver. An all-time Grand Final grab, extending his purple patch to the biggest stage.

Charlie Cameron: B+

An electric start to the contest, finished with a goal and 13 touches. Charlie's energy was crucial in kickstarting the game.

Darcy Wilmot: B+

A special talent, 15 touches.

Logan Morris: B+

Plays well above his age and did so superbly today, was substituted out of the game in the final term with six marks and two majors.

Eric Hipwood: B

Kicked one of the great Grand Final goals, bonus points for the nod to Aker with the celebration.

Jaspa Fletcher: B

Still so much footy to play for Fletcher, and yet performs with so much poise. A great game for the youngster.

Darcy Fort: B

What a story for the ruckman! Came into the side to replace a massive hole in the injured Oscar McInerney and held his own against no slouch in Brodie Grundy. Darcy Fort, premiership player!

Zac Bailey: B

Ryan Lester: B

Jack Payne: B

A great effort to continue to play through pain all September.

Conor McKenna: N/A

Entered the contest in the final term to relish in the glory.

Sydney Swans:

Errol Gulden: B

Attacked the footy all day. A solid 24 disposals.

Chad Warner: B

Explosive as always, driving through the middle however unable to make the most of his touch.

Luke Parker: B

Attempted to play a role on Harris Andrews, couldn’t impact, however went forward to nail three majors in the final term. Could it be his final game as a Swan?

Lewis Melican: B

Stood tall in several contests, can hold his head high.

Robbie Fox: B

Came into the side and made things happen when the opportunity came his way. 21 touches and a goal, a strong game.

James Rowbottom: B

Won plenty of hard ball. Led the game with 10 clearances, 19 disposals and a goal.

Brodie Grundy: C+

Was called upon midweek as a player who needed to capitalise on Oscar McInerney’s absence, and despite edging out the contest with Darcy Fort, just couldn’t dominate in the manner that he probably should’ve.

Isaac Heeney: C+

Tried all day, just unable to make it happen as he has in previous weeks.

Dane Rampe: C

Jake Lloyd: C

James Jordan: C

Was shifted on several occasions without much success.

Oliver Florent: C

Matt Roberts: C

19 touches to cap off a very solid first year.

Justin McInerney: C-

Hayden McLean: C-

Harry Cunningham: C-

Had a bit of run but poor use of the footy.

Will Hayward: C-

Secured the first goal for the punters.

Tom McCartin: D+

Couldn’t slow the dominant Brisbane key forwards.

Tom Papley: D+

Explosive start, fell out of the game just as fast. Well beaten by Starcevich.

Joel Amartey: D+

Logan McDonald: N/A

Clearly played without full freedom. Substituted just after half time with just one touch.

Braeden Campbell: N/A

Injected into the contest at the start of the second half.
