Josh Jenkins has outlined St Kilda’s biggest hits and misses from the last five years of drafting and recruiting players.

The former Adelaide Crows forward will assess each of the 18 clubs on AFL Trade Radio and provide what he believes have been the hits and misses when it comes to player acquisition over the last half decade.

Read his thoughts on the Saints below:

St Kilda hits

“In terms of their big hit, I reckon it’s no doubt landing Mitch Owens, Marcus Windhager and Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera in the same draft,” Jenkins said on The Late Trade.

“That's a fantastic result for them in the same draft.

“But I reckon there's a conversation I want to have about Mitch Owens in a about where his best footy he's played, how they utilise him and what they should do with him going forward.

“He burst onto the scene … they use him as a backup ruckman but he’s about 6’3, then they’ll ask him to play on a Tom Stewart in a defensive role.

“I don’t reckon they set him up to be the best player he can be with the roles he plays.”

St Kilda misses

“In terms of the big miss, I'll go back to that blunder in my opinion before making that run to the second week of the finals in 2020, I think they thought they were a bit more advanced than they really were,” Jenkins added.

“They went after Zak Jones, Paddy Ryder, Dougal Howard, Brad Hill and Dan Butler all in the same trade period before that 2020 season … but I don’t reckon those guys have catapulted the club forward.

“They made finals that year but it hasn’t continued since … I think it's really hard to see how they don't need to take a step back to finally take the steps forward required to be a real contender.

“They’re right in the middle of no man's land at the moment.”
