The Western Bears bid to join the NRL has seen many ups and downs over recent weeks and on Wednesday, the current bid was officially rejected with the NRL claiming a low-ball offer.
The Daily Telegraph's Micheal Carayannis told SEN of the complexities of the deal and potential for it to be re-examined.
“The NRL are still in discussions with the state government in Western Australia to see if they (Western Bears) will come to the party,” Carayannis told SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“Peter V’landys has come out and said the Bears aren’t dead, the North Sydney Bears will be aligned with any potential franchise that happens in Western Australia.”
The side was expected to join the NRL in 2027, however with the team requiring a year to build a squad, the panel suggests if this is to happen, a decision needs to be finalised within coming weeks.
“They are ready to go, but if it’s a new entity or an NRL controlled entity, I don’t think that process gets moving until next year because there is a lot of work that needs to be done,” he added.
Carayannis explains the financial issues surrounding this deal, explaining the NRL is asking for a total $50 million from the Bears.
Whilst the team was prepared for a $30 million start up fee, a $20 million licencing fee was more unexpected and has seen issues emerge.
“They need to have the cash in the bank and put the $50 million forward and they are right to go,” Voss said on Breakfast with Vossy & Brandy.
Despite economic pressures, Carayannis disagrees and cements this is not the only thing holding the team back and is unsure if the NRL will change their mind following their shock decision.
“Getting word out of the NRL yesterday, I’m not sure they’re willing to go back.”
