The worst has been confirmed for Hastings Racecourse today with Hawke's Bay Racing (HBRI) and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) Management confirming that reconstruction of the track will be brought forward, closing the track for racing effective immediately.
The decision comes after the Livamol Classic moved from Hastings to Te Rapa due to concerning track conditions.
“While this news will be disappointing for the Hawke’s Bay community and racing enthusiasts, both parties believe that prioritising this project is essential for the long-term future of racing in the region," HBRI Chair Eliot Cooper said in a statement.
“The decision reflects a commitment to addressing the underlying track issues for participants and horses alike," NZTR COO Darin Balcombe added.
The two parties are set to meet later this month to discuss next steps for the racecourse, with a guarantee that affected stakeholders will stayed informed of the reconstruction's progress and any potential timeline changes.
