The St George Illawarra Dragons’ board has formally given captain Ben Hunt permission to talk to rival clubs, two weeks earlier than allowed as his future at the club comes into serious doubt.

Hunt has flirted with leaving the club a handful of times over the last couple of years but has been re-assured by the club on every occasion but it seems this time he has certainly played his last game for the Red V.

A move back to Queensland is on the cards for Hunt but a Sydney-based team has emerged as a potential suitor, according to SEN’s Michelle Bishop.

“What I’ve heard is that there is some interest out of the Bulldogs for Ben Hunt,” Bishop told SEN 1170 The Run Home.

With Hunt seemingly having one foot out the door, Bishop also noted the Dragons are looking to replace the playmaker with two stars from local rivals the Cronulla Sharks.

“The interesting part for the Dragons is, I’m hearing that Daniel Atkinson and Braydon Trindall are of great interest over there.

“So one of those to move to the Dragons, I’m hearing for next year, which is unusual because Braydon Trindall is signed for next year.

“Obviously a bit to play out there but that’s just what I’m hearing.

“I wouldn’t be surprised in the Dogs being interested in Ben Hunt.”

Hunt is contracted until the end of the 2025 season on a deal worth around $950k per year.
