THE Brisbane Lions have settled on Sam Day in an attempt to soften the blow of Joe Daniher’s retirement.
While clearly not a replacement for Daniher, Day is set to provide the Lions with forward and ruck cover in 2025 at little expense.
It is expected that Brisbane will sign Day as a delisted free agent in the coming days after he was let go by Gold Coast early last month.
Day, 32, played 155 games across 14 seasons for the Suns as a foundation recruit. But injuries have restricted him to only 18 games over the past four years.
He was troubled by a plantar fascia injury this year, but returned to the Suns’ VFL side late in the campaign.
The Lions have been quiet players on the trade front this year, with contracted midfielder Deven Robertson now considered likely, but not certain, to stay at the Gabba.
Harry Sharp has joined Melbourne, but Brisbane has otherwise chipped away at amassing points to match bids for potential No.1 pick Levi Ashcroft and northern academy prospect Sam Marshall.
