Three-time All-Australian Dan Hannebery has questioned North Melbourne’s decision to part with pick 25 in a trade for Caleb Daniel.
The trade between the Roos and Dogs was made official ahead of Wednesday’s deadline with pick 25 heading to Whitten Oval in exchange for the 192-gamer.
With the second-round pick getting the deal done, Hannebery thinks that the Roos should have instead taken the quality selection to the draft.
While the Roos are in search of veteran leadership, Hannebery thinks their acquisitions of Luke Parker from Sydney and Jack Darling from West Coast fill that need with the Daniel recruitment at 28 years old ‘overkill’ in bringing in players to guide their young group.
“If I’m a North Melbourne fan, I think it's a bad call,” Hannebery said.
“We speak out this draft and how deep it is, I think a pick in the second round with where they're at, they should keep getting that talent in.
“Even though Caleb Daniel is going to make them a better side – I do believe he’s a good ball user and he has great leadership and a couple of good years ahead of him - but they're getting (Luke) Parker and (Jack) Darling, they’ve got enough leadership players.
“If you keep going down that path, you're sort of stuck in no man's land a little bit I feel as North Melbourne.
“Keep getting the gun young talent in, support them with a few leaders, Parker and Darling give them that. To go again with Caleb Daniel, I think is a bit of overkill.
“Go to the draft this year and get as much talent as you can.”
Daniel was one of three Dogs to depart the club on deadline day alongside Jack Macrae (St Kilda) and Bailey Smith (Geelong).
