The 2024 AFL Trade Period is finally over after a particularly busy deadline day.
Josh Jenkins and Adam Cooney made their snap judgments just after the trade period concluded on Wednesday night, assessing the best and worst trade deals.
“I think you have got to be most excited about Bailey Smith going to the Cats,” Cooney said on SEN's Sportsday.
“I don’t think they’ve overpaid for him giving Pick 17 and 38, he has a huge amount of upside, there is a small amount of risk involved in it, but I think they could be the big winner out of this.”
In comparison, Cooney then provided an example of a team in Hawthorn that overpaid for the services of Eagles premiership defender Tom Barrass.
“I think the Barrass deal was certainly more expensive than what I was anticipating with a future first, future second, and future third heading out west, with a future fourth coming back,” he added.
Jenkins then detailed his favourite trade and the impact it could bring to his new club.
“My favourite would be Shai Bolton getting to Fremantle,” said Jenkins.
“He is exactly what they need. Dismiss and disregard what happened this year, I don’t think he was putting his best foot forward, but he’s got some match-winning abilities and that’s exactly what Fremantle need.”
Cooney was then asked which trade deal made the least sense to him.
“Caleb Daniel for Pick 25 is a heavy price to pay,” said the Brownlow Medallist.
“It’s a high pick, and he’s getting a four-year deal, so they obviously think that he’s got some very good football in front of him.”
Jenkins then answered the same question and provided his choice for the deal that made the least sense to him.
“I find the Jake Stringer one really strange,” said the former Crow.
“I wouldn’t have gone down that path if I was GWS, I think.
“I don’t think he’s necessarily what they needed, so that’s going to be a massive watch for the Giants next year.
“How they integrate Jake Stringer into their forward line, particularly when they’ve got some talented medium sized forwards, like Toby Greene for one, and even a young Callum Brown who looks like he’s got some talent.”
