Discussions have stormed around the appropriate punishment for Brisbane Broncos’ five-eighth, Ezra Mam, after his involvement in a two-car crash on Friday afternoon.
The Broncos star allegedly failed a roadside drug test and has been alleged of driving unlicensed.
The crash saw Mam collide with an Uber holding three passengers, who were lucky to avoid any serious injuries.
“I reckon it looks something like this; 8 weeks suspension from the NRL, $100,000 fine, $50,000 of that suspended and all sorts of community involvement attached with that,” Jimmy Smith said on SEN 1170 Afternoons.
“Does that feel like enough?”
“He is so fortunate that no one was more seriously hurt or indeed killed in this accident, including himself but most particularly the three people in the Uber.”
Smith explains the severity of this situation, expecting to see the NRL pass down a severe punishment which could include a suspension or even release from the club, if found guilty of all charges.
“This is as serious as it gets and the NRL integrity unit will be watching very closely,” he added.
“The Broncos will have the opportunity to hand down a punishment first. The NRL integrity unit will then look at it, deem whether it's appropriate or not and move forward from that.”
This incident comes after a string of issues for the Broncos in 2024 following a disappointing season which saw the firing of coach Kevin Walters and hiring of Michael Maguire, which saw much disapproval from Broncos old boys.
Smith expects Mam’s actions will have a lasting impact on the team, with questions of line up and reputation in the air.
“This is incredibly serious and has the potential to derail the Brisbane Broncos for months to come.”
