Despite a convincing 18-0 win over the Tonga side, SEN’s Andrew Voss and Greg Alexander discuss the lack of cohesion from the Kangaroos in the opening game of the Pacific Championship.
“It was obvious that it was a new combination. They didn't look fluent with the ball, their attack was very disjointed,” Voss said on SEN1170.
Voss discussed the difficulties of playing as a new team, especially in such a short competition, as it is difficult to achieve team unity.
Voss suggested the importance of keeping the key players together, as they each have clear strengths and potential to play together well despite coming from different clubs.
“I think they need to keep Dylan Edwards, Mitch Moses, Tom Dearden, and Harry Grant together,” he added.
“These four players just haven't played football together.
“I find it very hard to see how they would change the spine.
“They need time on the field together, not just on the training paddock.”
The Kangaroos will face the New Zealand Kiwis on Sunday, in what is expected to be a tight game.
Alexander encouraged coach Mal Meninga to prioritise consistency in the team’s line-up, believing a game against the Pacific Championship reigning champions is not the time to play around with positioning.
“I think it would be a sign of complacency to just hand out jerseys…to make changes as if we are going to just to trial some people against New Zealand sell out in Christchurch,” Alexander said on SEN1170.
“I think it would be very dangerous.”
The Pacific Championship continues on Sunday 27th October as Australia faces New Zealand in a rematch of last year's final.
