Kiwi head coach, Stacey Jones joined SEN1170 to discuss his strategy going into New Zealand’s first game of the 2024 Pacific Championship.
Jones played 46 Tests for the Kiwis and was this year named the head coach of the side following many years in the assistant role.
“It is something I am really honoured and excited about,” Jones told SEN 1170 Breakfast.
The New Zealand legend explained, given the short turn around and limited game series, he is prioritising team cohesion and simple messaging in his coaching.
“You only get a short period of preparation (so) the main thing for me is to keep things as simple as possible.”
“My job is just to make sure we are as tight as we can be and that the team is prepared and the messaging has been pretty simple.”
Jones explains training has surrounded mastering basic plays and avoiding anything too technical, to ensure everything runs smoothly.
The coach says the most important thing is that the team is connected, which he feels is an integral part of representing New Zealand.
“The main thing is to make sure we connect as a group and it is quite easy to do that in a Kiwi environment," he added.
“All the players and staff are passionate about the Kiwi jersey.”
The New Zealand side entered this year's competition as reigning champions, however, a string of injuries saw the team struggle to put a team together, positioning them in a dangerous position as they prepare to take on Australia in their first game.
“I know there is pressure on us and there have been a few headaches going on in the last month with players who were part of the team last year that aren't there but we have got to put together a squad that wants to be in this space.”
“It certainly hasn't been a smooth ride in terms of getting a squad together.”
“It was tough particularly with the injury to Jahrome Hughes.”
“It's a totally new spine that we have got.”
Despite issues, Jones is confident in the team assembled, in particular is excited to see young star Keano Kini paired alongside New Zealand great Shaun Johnson.
New Zealand kick off their Pacific Championship run against Australia on Sunday 27th October in Christchurch.
