SEN host Tom Morris can’t wrap his head around St Kilda’s decision to let Tim Membrey walk to Collingwood as a delisted free agent.
According to reports, Membrey will join Collingwood once the delisted free agency window opens on November 1.
Given the 30-year-old kicked 30 goals from 19 games in 2024, with 14 of those coming from his last six appearances, Morris doesn’t think that the Saints should be letting Membrey walk and should have fought harder to give the veteran a new deal for 2025.
“The other news over the last few days has revolved around Tim Membrey,” Morris said on SEN The Captain’s Run.
“He is joining Collingwood as a delisted free agent, and that just surprises me.
“Tell me I'm wrong, it just surprises me that the Saints are letting him go.
“I think he is and has been an important player for them. He's durable, he's not such a good team man, but he's also a pretty consistent performer.
“I would love to know why Ross Lyon and the list management crew were ok to let him go and why they didn’t offer him a deal that allowed him to stay?”
While Membrey is clearly closer to the finish than the end, Morris thinks that he still has some good footy ahead of him and will turn out a quality pick up for Collingwood.
“I think he's a good pick up for Collingwood,” Morris said.
“Yes, he's on the wrong side of 30, but he's probably still got a couple more good years left in him.
“As a delisted free agent, I think that's a that's a good get for the Collingwood Football Club.
“They've picked up Dan Houston, they've picked up Harry Perryman, I’m fascinated by this.”
Membrey kicked 292 goals from 178 games in the red, white and black across 10 seasons.
