Joseph Suaalii has been officially named as a part of the 34-man Wallabies squad for the spring tour of the UK, as he enters 2025 with rugby union under a three year $5 million contract.
Suaalii finished his Roosters career in 2024, leaving many to question what this move means for the integrity of the sport as the soon to be Australian representative has never played a game of professional rugby union.
The Daily Telegraph’sDavid Riccio joined SEN1170 to discuss his thoughts on the topic, believing the deal brings the principle of the competition into question.
“I always recall the Wallabies jersey being held in the highest regard…it should never be about money,” Riccio told SEN 1170 Breakfast.
“That's not the prestige of what I always believed of the Wallabies jersey and what legends of the game like John Eales forged so hard to uphold.”
Riccio and Andrew Voss agree that despite understanding why Suaalii would take up the deal, believe he would not be considering it without the payment attached.
The two believe the sport should be played by those who know and appreciate it, unsure of what this could mean for the future of the Wallabies side.
“It is an opportunity that I can't knock Suaalii for taking, absolutely you take it,” Riccio added.
“I really don't care what anyone says, Joseph Suaalii doesn't go back to rugby league if he’s not on a $5 million deal.”
“You can’t give the deal and then just throw in the Wallaby jersey like a set of steak knives,” Voss said
As the Wallabies prepare for their UK tour, many fans are questioning the integrity of the sport and the lasting impacts of Suaalii’s selection.
