Cox Plate champion Via Sistina will not run in this year’s Melbourne Cup.
The Chris Waller-trained star rocketed into Cup favouritism after last Saturday’s eight-length Cox Plate romp with her ownership group, Yulong Investments, weighing up the decision to back her up in the race that stops a nation.
However, after a discussion with trainer and owner, connections have made the call to not race on the first Tuesday in November.
Via Sistina became the world’s top-ranked horse on that back of that astonishing triumph at The Valley last weekend and punters flocked to back the mare with her Cup price plummeting down to $5.
Via Sistina will now target the Group 1 Champions Stakes at Flemington on November 9.
She's the current $1.70 favourite for that race with James McDonald expected to ride.
