The St George Illawarra Dragons have released Ben Hunt from his contract, allowing the halfback the freedom to look at returning to Queensland to finish out his career.
SEN’s Andrew Voss and Greg Alexander discussed Hunt’s departure, and potential options for the former Dragons captain, expecting he could return to his hometown.
“It comes as no surprise that Ben Hunt has finally come to an agreement with the Dragons, that he was no longer suited to the club and he didn't want to go back to training for the Dragons,” Alexander said on SEN1170.
“I think the happiest place for Ben Hunt would be the Brisbane Broncos,” Voss said on SEN 1170.
Following Broncos star, Ezra Mam’s recent off field incident and impending court case, questions remain of the future of the five-eighth, however it appears unlikely he will see much of the 2025 season.
This opens up a spot for Hunt to return to the club he began his career, which Voss expressed could bring out the best in him.
“If Mam isn’t available for the Broncos and they do get salary cap relief well then Ben Hunt might be able to slip into a Brisbane jumper,” he added.
“He has plenty to offer the NRL and he would work well with the Broncos.”
However, with the details surrounding Mam’s case and implications still unknown, as is any potential future between Ben Hunt and Brisbane.
If Mam is to return to the club, Voss and Alexander throw out Sydney options for Hunt, suggesting Hunt could slide into the vacant role of hooker at Parramatta or an extra half at the Roosters.
