Matt Hill has provided his tip for the 2024 Melbourne Cup (3200m).
The esteemed race caller is siding with UK raider Onesmoothoperator who races second-up in Australia on the back of a dominant Geelong Cup triumph.
He can see the seven-year-old gelding following in the footsteps of Media Puzzle (2002), Americain (2010) and Dunaden (2011) who have previously completed the Geelong/Melbourne Cup double.
Onesmoothoperator, trained by Englishman Brian Ellison, will be ridden by Craig Williams who won the 2019 Cup.
“I’m tipping Onesmoothoperator,” Hill said on SEN Breakfast.
“He was so impressive in winning the Geelong Cup. Three horses of high quality have done the Geelong Cup/Melbourne Cup double and I reckon it might be this year again.
“Craig Williams rode Vow And Declare to win it in 2019 and it might just be his second.
“The trainer, Brian Ellison, is a great story. He’s a Geordie from Newcastle in Great Britain.
“He loves listening to John Williamson’s ‘True Blue’ and watches the Phar Lap movie over and over again. He loves Australia and loves the Melbourne Cup.
“It’s a pretty good story.”
Onesmoothoperator has drawn barrier 12 and is currently priced at $8.50 with Sportsbet for Tuesday’s Cup at Flemington.
Hill also provided his early selection for the VRC Oaks (2500m) which takes place on Thursday.
Treasurethe Moment was a comfortable Wakeful Stakes winner on Derby Day which has her as the Oaks favourite at $3.50.
“We have a better picture of the Oaks after the Wakeful on Saturday,” Hill added.
“A horse called Treasurethe Moment will be very hard to beat for Mornington trainer Matt Laurie.”
