“I don’t think that’s great”: The biggest winners and losers from the Melbourne Cup barrier draw

The barrier draw for the 2024 Melbourne Cup was completed on Saturday night.

Cup fancy Buckaroo has been dealt a blow with the wide gate of 21 while Irish raider Vauban, who was last year's favourite, drew favourably in 11.

SENTrack's Miles Pfitzner has taken a close look at the draw, giving his thoughts on who he believes to be the biggest winners and losers.

Winners

Vauban (11): "Vauban drawing 11, tick. It should play out fairly well from a map perspective now."

Absurde (7): "Absurde drawing 7, tick. This is another nice draw, some luck for Willie Mullins' pair. "

Warp Speed (3): "Warp Speed drawing 3, tick. Much better than gate 16 in the Caulfield Cup."

Losers

Buckaroo (21): "Buckaroo 21, loser. Too wide for a horse that wants to be closer to the speed."

Land Legend (18): "Land Legend out of gate 18, I don’t think that’s great for it. That’s a loser out of the barrier draw."

Sea King (1): "Sea King drawing (barrier) 1. I hate 1 in these races like this. I think Sea King is a loser from gate 1."
