The 2024 Melbourne Cup has produced a stunning finish with Knight’s Choice wowing Flemington by claiming the race at a staggering BSP of $268!

The win also produced a record carnival price advantage of 322.1%, dwarfing the Best Tote and Corporate Average price of $65.

It was the second straight year that the Melbourne Cup has drawn parallel’s with Ethereal’s mighty charge to victory in 2001.

Last year saw Without A Fight become the first horse to win the Cups double (Caulfield and Melbourne Cups) since Ethereal that year.

Fast forward 12 months to the 2024 edition of the race, and Ethereal’s popular trainer Sheila Laxon (now partnered with John Symons) has got Knight’s Choice home for her second Melbourne Cup.

Knight’s Choice hit $990 in the run before sneaking up the inside to nab Japanese raider Warp Speed on the post. Zardozi, Buckaroo and Okita Soushi all looked a decent chance to win in the closing 200m of the race.

28-year-old Irish Jockey Robbie Dolan was lost for words after the race, telling Channel 9

“I can’t believe it,” he said.

“This is the biggest race in the world and to win it is amazing.

“He (Knight’s Choice) just proved everybody wrong.”

Co trainer John Symons said: “We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t think we could win.

“What a ride by Robbie. What a thrill, what a thrill.”

Sheila Laxon said: What an amazing ride by Robbie. We didn’t give him instructions. He just knew what to do.

“The Australian horse has done it. I’m thrilled to win the Cup. It’s the people’s Cup and it’s what it’s all about.”

Pre race favourite Buckaroo, and Willie Mullins import Vauban were both matched for more than a million dollars, with that figure marking the second straight year that Vauban (last year’s favourite) attracted that much volume.

Most of the late money came for Geelong Cup winner Onesmoothoperator who firmed from $9 into $7.40.

Nearly $6 million in total was matched on the Melbourne Cup.
