Former Australian fast bowler and South Australian coach Ryan Harris believes Nathan McSweeney is the Aussie test team's incumbent opener ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy where the side will face India.
McSweeney tallied 127 runs in Australia A’s clash with India A, including a match-saving second innings finishing with 88 unbeaten. Australia A vanquished the visitors by 7 wickets assuring Harris of the South Australian’s capability at the top of the order.
“Seeing his work ethic and drive to be successful and to want as most young guys do want to play for Australia, he’s got it all,” Harris told SEN SA's Sportsday.
“Just to see his game and he had a good year last year and he’s already started off with a bang this year. The improvement in his game over that period has been unreal.
“In the A game, he batted really well in the first innings on what was a tough wicket and then he got them over the line in the second innings.
“I think he’s an excellent in.”
Confirmation from George Bailey that McSweeney will be promoted to opener for the second match of the series at the MCG provides clarity that the South Australian captain is firming for a baggy green.
Harris resolutely feels that the 24-year-old's game can stand up to the test of facing the new ball against a potent Indian attack.
“I’ve got him in that spot,” he said.
“I believe he’s good enough, he’s got the technique, and temperament and for a young bloke who’s 24 he’s got the maturity as well.
“Being absolutely biased I think he’s sewn that spot up.”
Australia A’s second match against India A commences at the MCG on the 7th November before the Border-Gavaskar Trophy begins in Perth on the 22nd of November.
