The third round of games of the 2024-25 Sheffield Shield season have been complete.
South Australia beat Victoria by 138 runs at the Adelaide Oval, NSW drew Queensland at Cricket Central and WA beat Tasmania by an innings and 45 runs at Bellerive Oval.
While a raft of big names appeared in the last round of Shield fixtures, many were unavailable this time around due to Australia A and ODI duties.
With that in mind, we’ve taken a look at those Test performers who played and the other standouts who put their names up in lights.
Alex Carey (SA)
44 & 42
Continued his impressive form with the bat ahead of the Test summer. Also took three catches and picked up an important stumping on the final day.
Ben Manenti (SA)
5/73 & 1/27, 20 and 62 not out
The Player of the Match bowled some quality spin, particularly in the first innings.
With the bat, his knock of 62 not out in South Australia’s second dig helped the home side set a total that was always going to be extremely difficult for the Vics to chase.
Lloyd Pope (SA)
0/52 & 6/74
Quiet in the first innings with the ball but was just about the match-winner on the final day as he spun his team to victory.
All six of his wickets came on Day 4, with four of those coming in three overs bowling from the cathedral end as the end of the game neared.
Peter Siddle (VIC)
3/57 & 4/63
Was Victoria’s best with the ball and showed he still had it in his last pro summer.
At 39 years, 342 days, Siddle also became the oldest pace bowler to send down the first over of a Shield match in 95 years.
Josh Hazlewood (NSW)
0/57
Didn’t break through for a wicket but got 24 overs into his legs ahead of the Test summer.
Usman Khawaja (QLD)
58
Would have been happy to spend 129 balls in the middle and pass his half-century in Queensland’s only dig.
Matt Renshaw (QLD)
25
Can’t get enough runs to put any real pressure on selectors to even consider him. Did spend 110 balls at the crease, though.
Angus Lovell (QLD)
146 not out
Came in for Marnus Labuschagne who was on ODI duties and didn’t disappoint.
His unbeaten century was his first First Class score of triple figures in his five Shield games.
Hilton Cartwright (WA)
153
Finished as the Player of the Match for his big score of 153 batting at number four.
Brody Couch (WA)
1/21 & 3/15 (incl. hat-trick)
The former Victorian quick had a huge game for his new state, becoming the first WA bowler in Shield history to take a hat-trick.
Crouch had Jake Doran LBW, Lawrence Neil-Smith edging onto his stumps and Sam Elliott clean bowled to secure his hat-trick just after Tea on Day 4.
His hat-trick was the 33rd in Sheffield Shield history.
