Hobart hosts its second thoroughbred meeting for the week with an eight-race program on Saturday.

The feature is the $50,000 Goodwood Handicap, which has attracted an excellent field.

The rail shifts out slightly to +11m from 1200m to W/P, the remainder 9m, after being +9m for the Melbourne Cup Day program.

Best bet

Race 4 – 1. Kakia

Jessie Bazan had a winner with her sole runner here on Tuesday, and I think Kakia can add to the tally. After having no luck on debut, his two subsequent runs last campaign were super, concluding with a second to the unbeaten Press For Boom. He’s had a pair of trials in readiness for his return and has blinkers applied for the first time.

Next best

Race 3 – 4. Rowing Power

There will be no prizes for finding Rowing Power in the staying race. He’s been a beaten favourite at his last three starts and arguably should have won them all. Slowly out of the gates, Rowing Power has been his own worst enemy, but the way he has been attacking the line suggests the rise to 2100m, along with the big expanses of the Hobart track, should suit.

Best value

Race 1 – 3. Geegees Downpour

I was keen on Geegees Downpour first-up in Launceston, but he was a step slow from the barriers and, from there, was given a quiet time by the rider, to the extent that stewards queried the tactics. This is certainly no harder, and he has a rider change with Mehmet Ulucinar going aboard, fresh off a double, including a win for this stable. Geegees Downpour is one I can easily see coming up over my assessed price.
