Nathan McSweeney has won the race to open the batting for Australia alongside Usman Khawaja ahead of the country’s first Test match in Perth this summer.

The 25-year old has been in stellar form in the Sheffield Shield, with the Queenslander averaging 85.6 runs a game in his last five matches for South Australia.

His impressive form didn’t end there as he managed to post an average score of 41.5 runs from his four Australia A matches in the past month.

McSweeney beats out the likes of Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Sam Konstas, who have all been competing for the vacant position left originally by the retired David Warner and after Steve Smith dropped back down the order.

Australian selectors have also opted to not include any of McSweeney’s competitors for the opening batting position, with Josh Inglis also being added to the squad as a backup wicketkeeper for Alex Carey.

“Nathan has displayed the attributes we believe will equip him well for Test cricket along with a strong recent record in domestic cricket,” Chair of Selectors George Bailey said.

“His performances for South Australia and Australia A weighed in his favour and supports our view he is ready for the opportunity at Test level.

“Similarly, Josh has been in great touch in the Sheffield Shield competition and deserves his place in his first Test squad.

“Scott has been a top-level performer when given the opportunity at Test level and remains a valued member of the squad.

“The squad is balanced and provides Andrew and Pat the options required for what shapes as a captivating series.”

McSweeney’s debut as an opening batter for Australia’s Test side will come in Perth on November 22 when they take on India.
