After missing the Rugby World Cup finals for the first time in history last year, Australian rugby union was struggling. Then, to much debate, they signed the 'Joes' - Schmidt and Sua'ali'i - to save the code.
Now, an inspired last-minute victory over England has inspired hopes the Wallabies are enjoying a resurgence thanks to the influence of the pair.
Speaking to SEN’s Sportsday, Wallabies fullback Tom Wright revealed the impact that Schmidt has had on the team and what he’s been able to bring to the side.
“Joe has brought a real level-headedness, a real assertiveness to the direction that he knows this team needs to go in and deserves to go in,” said Wright.
“We’ve all had to buy into a structure and a game plan that wasn’t too dissimilar to what we’re all familiar with at a super rugby level but what he has done is really galvanise a group.
“He's been able to get guys in, (and) get their feet well and truly set under the desk.”
Schmidt, who previously coached for the Ireland and New Zealand national sides, took over the head coach position for Australia in March of this year, following the departure of Eddie Jones.
Wright was also full of praise for ex-rugby league player Joseph Sua’ali’i, who was awarded man of the match honours in his national debut as the Wallabies defeated England 42-37.
Despite being only 21, Sua’ali’i is on a three-year contract with Rugby Australia worth five million dollars, with the amount proving controversial amongst the public. However, Wright only had praise for the former Sydney Roosters winger.
“He takes that level-headed approach from the NRL, and he brought the same approach into that game on the weekend,” stated Wright.
“He treated it the same as he does all his other games, and we saw that in the way he played.
“He wasn’t overcome by the occasion.”
The Wallabies will look to prolong their winning ways as they continue their tour of the United Kingdom, taking on Wales on Monday.
