SENTrack: Tasracing’s Wednesday best bets at Launceston (13/11)

After two meetings in Hobart last week, thoroughbred racing returns north Wednesday night for an eight-race program in Launceston.

It looks like a good betting card, with deep fields through the night.

The rail is +8m 1200m-W/Post, +6m Remainder, with fine weather forecast.

Race 3 – 12. Paulartes

Paulartes made this article at her first start in the state, and I’m following up again. She was 88 days between runs when first-up over 1400m, where she led at a genuine tempo and was overpowered in the final 100m. One would expect her to have improved from that run, and in a race lacking obvious pace, I think she can work to the front from the wide draw, and hopefully, this time, the chasers won’t make it past her.

Race 2 – 6. Thonatus

Thonatus is another follow-up from last start. On that occasion, he led at a moderate clip and was swamped late with the first four clearing out from the rest of the field. Third in that race was a dominant winner in Hobart last Saturday, and Thonatus drops from a class 1 to a maiden/class 1 with no additional weight. Craig Newitt takes the ride, and he was aboard when Thonatus broke his maiden with a sensational run at the start of the year.

Race 1 – 6. Geegeehailstorm

Placed at four of her five runs at the track and distance, I think Geegeehailstorm can add to that in the opening race on Wednesday night. Her first-up run had merit where she went back from a wide gate and was clearly the best of the closers in a race dominated from the front. She’s shown an ability to race close to the speed in the past, which will hopefully be the case if she jumps well from barrier 2. It wasn’t that long ago she jumped $1.40 in a 1200m Launceston maiden, yet she’s double figures here.
