Talented Malua Racing filly Supercilious is way over the odds in this weekend’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas at Caulfield.
That’s according to co-trainer Troy Corstens who feels, at $23 with Sportsbet, that she’s been missed in the market in the 1600m feature race on Saturday.
Supercilious ran on nicely for third in The Amanda Elliott over 1400m on Melbourne Cup Day and now that she has drawn a decent gate (barrier 1) she could again figure in the finish.
“She’s really well and I think she’s way over the odds,” Corstens said on SEN Breakfast.
“It’s the first time she’s drawn a gate for about three runs so she should get a very economical run. We can ride her a lot closer than we have been and she’s been smashing the line.
“My little question mark is whether she’s a true 1600m horse, but it’s a nice way to find out in a Group 1 race.”
Damian Lane, who rode her last time, will partner with rival Lovelycut in the Thousand Guineas, while Ben Allen, who rode her in the two starts prior, is suspended.
With that being the case, the stable has opted for Jordan Childs to steer Supercilious.
“Jordy is a very, very good rider and we’re losing nothing there putting Jordy on,” Corstens added.
Troy and brother Leon, and their training partner Will Larkin, have also prepared Bittercreek for the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.
He last ran eighth in good company in the Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Derby Day and now steps out to 1400m under Robbie Dolan.
“We’ve got the Melbourne Cup-winning jockey, 50kg on his back,” he said of the three-year-old colt.
“He’s a three-year-old taking on the older horses, it’s a very good race, but I think he’ll run a bit of a bottler.
“He just needs a bit of luck, he’s drawn 11 so that’s a bit of a pain in the bum. But he’s going particularly well and he’s perfectly fit and ready to go.”
Bittercreek is currently priced at $41 for the Rupert Clarke which is the last Group 1 in Victoria this year.
