PHEARSON (The Hunter) didn’t have the best of luck two back over this track and trip when slightly slow away and squeezed out early. Back and wide last start in a much stronger race when not suited under SWP conditions behind Bella Nipotina. He will be given a positive ride from the low draw and that’s when he does his best work, expect improvement.
MATISSE (Thousand Guineas) loomed up and peaked on her effort last start. She was exposed early there when the winner (Zeitung) was tucked away in behind horses before getting out late. Prepared to excuse that and include her in my Showdown.
WAR MACHINE (Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes) came through a lead up race that went below average in the early and middle stages of the race into a very fast early tempo in the Golden Eagle, in which he settled only a couple of lengths from. He wasn’t beaten far and the horses that finished in front of him are elite. He’s much better suited here under handicap conditions and drops 5.5kg on that last start effort. Maps to receive every possible.

COASTWATCH (The Hunter) failed last time at Caulfield, but he's since been back to Sydney, trialled well and looks ready to bounce back. He was hard in the market behind Jimmysstar two back and before that was very good when fresh in the Theo Marks. Through the late autumn and winter he mixed it with the likes of Yellow Brick and Freedom Rally after winning the Luskin Star at Scone. He's up to this.
STAGE N SCREEN (Thousand Guineas) was an impressive debut winner at Seymour and then had no luck on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington against the boys. It was a day that was an advantage to be on the fence, and this filly was three-wide-no-cover throughout, looked to drop out - which she was entitled to do - but she was strong through the line to run fourth. A much softer gate and rise to 1600m looks to suit.
ROLL ON HIGH (Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes) beat Stefi Magnetica in the Fred Best Classic earlier in the year and then ran a big race in the Tatts Tiara behind Bella Nipotina which is A-Grade form. She resumed in The Invitation behind Belclare who has since won again, while Magic Time won this race last year after running in The Invitation, so she brings a similar profile to last year's winner. The map is sticky, especially if we get a hot fence, but if they can run home, she can be over the top of them.
