UPDATE
India has easily won the first Test in Perth, humiliating Australia by a margin of 295 runs after a dominant performance with both the bat and ball.
The Aussies had no hope of tasting victory after midway through Day 3, and after starting the second session on Day 4 at 5/104 still 430 in arrears of India, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh were simply hoping to get some time at the crease.
They'll be pleased that they somewhat managed to do that, with Head finishing on 89 from 101 balls until being caught behind off the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah, while Marsh made his way to 47 before being bowled chopping on by Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Alex Carey (36) kept the visitors out in the field for a little while longer than they would have liked, but in the third session, India wrapped up the Aussie's second innings for 238.
Skipper Bumrah continued his brilliant match with 3/42 in the second innings, backing up his 5/30 in the first innings.
Bumrah was well supported by Mohammed Siraj (3/51) who also did plenty of damage in the second innings.
The skipper just beat out young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for Man of the Match after the left-hander made 161 in India’s second innings to really set up the game for the visitors.
The Aussies will now lick their wounds and attempt to regroup for a huge second Test in Adelaide which begins on Friday, December 6.
EARLIER
India is one good session of cricket away from comprehensively winning the first Test with Australia 5/104 chasing a mammoth fourth innings target of 534 to win in Perth.
The home side began the Day’s play at 3/12 on their march to certain defeat and it didn’t take long for India to strike with Usman Khawaja (4) out early trying to take on a Mohammed Siraj short ball, much to the dismay of SEN Cricket’s Gerard Whateley.
Whateley described his dismissal as ‘honestly inexplicable’ as the left-hander played a rash attacking shot so early into a day where Australia would’ve hoped to show some fight.
The next wicket to fall was Steve Smith (17), and while the right-hander faced 60 balls while looking reasonably comfortable at the crease, he was caught behind also off the bowling of Siraj.
Travis Head (63 not out) batted through just about the entire session and looked to be playing on a different wicket to the rest of his teammates, smacking seven boundaries from 72 balls in a confident effort. The left-hander’s dig so far has been the one shining light for the Aussies with the bat all game.
Head returns to the crease with Mitchell Marsh (5 not out) when the second session begins at 4 pm (AEDT) and 1 pm (AWST).
